History of the Land

This land has long played a pivotal role in Mankato’s growth — from native geology and quarrying to agriculture, industrial development, and now outdoor recreation. Its story is layered and evolving, rooted in the community and rich in opportunity.

The Carney Company and Industrial Quarrying

In the late 1800s, Patrick Carney founded the Carney Company and began formal quarrying operations in Mankato. The site that is now Rockwell became one of many quarries operated by Carney. These operations provided high-quality limestone used in prominent buildings and infrastructure projects across the Midwest — including in cities like Chicago and Detroit.

Mankato Holstein Farm — Agricultural Recognition

In 1914, J.C. Marlow established the Mankato Holstein Farm adjacent to the quarry. The farm quickly earned national attention for its superior dairy genetics, bringing fame to Mankato in the agricultural sector. The land near the quarry was known for its productivity and innovation in farming practices.

The Rise of Vetter Stone Company

By 1954, the Vetter family established Vetter Stone Company, revitalizing the area's quarry industry. The site produced Oneota dolomite and Kasota stone, which were used in landmarks like the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. Vetter Stone helped elevate Mankato's reputation in architectural design and construction.

Final Phase of Quarrying

In the 2010s, a final phase of industrial use occurred with silica sand extraction under Jordan Sands, a division of Coughlan Companies. This period marked the last chapter of mineral extraction on the site. As operations ended, Holtmeier Construction stepped in once again — not just as owners, but as visionaries — committed to transforming the land from industrial resource to community treasure.
